I do not agree with the statement that China should immediately let the expression free in the public, but I approve of the evolution to freedom incrementally.
True, allowing the free expression in public has great merits, which has been substantiated in a number of western countries. However, it is hasty to draw the conclusion that free expression revolution is a wise decision, because analyzing Chinese issues by using the existing western democracy paradigm without considering the differences of culture and history paths is not appropriate to some extent.
From the historical point of view, traditional Chinese empires had governments of monopoly with no except. The concept of dictatorship is deeply rooted in Chinese people's mind. Since the chaos spawned by people who are given much more freedom will hurt the government's authority, the government prefer to use the authorial tools to keep the society stable just like the situation in ancient China.
From the cultural point of view, as for the word "Harmony", people have been largely influenced by the thought of Kongfuzi, the greatest philosopher in ancient China. People have been pursuing harmony of soul and society, which is somewhat the same as Plato's philosophy. So the word "harmonize" I believe is not a word used by government in order to protect its authority, though some western and Chinese critics think so.
But I, as well as the government, do agree with the importance of free expression. Reform really counts. Monopoly of power may be relatively efficient in the period of time when setting up a country, yet with the development of the nation, rational evolution of power distribution is of necessity. It is known to all that great changes have taken place in the structure of Chinese enterprise -- government strongly encourages and supports the growth of private companies nowadays, while in the past the majority of support and institution are only good to the nation-owned enterprises. Analogically, incremental reform of politics is proceeding too. I believe before long Chinese people will enjoy much more freedom of expression in public. Please give China enough time. 哎~~~假的厉害~~ |
